Two exhibits featuring Rhode Island artists!
The ART Front in 19th Century Rhode Island:
The Founders Behind the RI Cultural Icons of Today
Edna Lawrence (1898-1987): Drawings and Watercolors
The
nineteenth century ushered in an era of great abundance for Rhode
Island, which, by 1903, had the highest per capita income in the
United States. The industrial infrastructure for Rhode Island
was established before the Civil War. With peacetime, the
little state consolidated its industrial base, and became one of
the most formidable economic powerhouses in the nation. With
this accumulation of wealth came a sense of responsibility for the
greater good, leading to impressive improvements in the physical
and social institutions of Rhode Island. On the cultural front,
we saw the founding of art clubs, museums, and historical societies,
which, today, continue their mission to promote the arts.
But who were the visionaries and founders who laid the infrastructure
of these institutions? This exhibit will explore the artists
and thinkers around the Providence Art Club, the Rhode Island School
of Design, the Handicraft Club, the Newport Art Association, and
other important institutions, which were critical to art-makers
of the state.
Lawrence was a talented artist who graduated from RISD and then
taught there for 53 years, founding the RISD Nature Lab. The
exhibit can be viewed during gallery hours from Tuesday - Friday
from 11am - 5 pm, Saturdays 12pm - 4pm, or by appointment. The gallery
is closed on Sundays and Mondays. Exhibits are free and open
to the public. The gallery is closed on Sundays and Mondays.

Edna Lawrence (1898 - 1987) was a woman artist
of great versatility, energy and commitment to art. She studied
at the Rhode Island School of Design and received her degree in
painting and free hand drawing in 1920, and then was hired onto
faculty, becoming a full-time professor. Among her legacies
was the founding of the RISD nature lab in 1937, where she accumulated
20,000 specimens for her students to have "hands-on" examples
of natural objects to draw and study. Lawrence touched
the lives of hundreds of first year students at the art school with
her gentle manner and exacting instruction.
This Bert Gallery exhibit is a sampling of various works on paper
across Lawrence's productive career as a RISD professor, ardent
traveler and Providence Art Club member. Watercolors from
the 1940's, finely drawn portraits and travel sketches make up the
body of work on view. All are remarkable in their craftsmanship
and demonstrate a technical proficiency unmatched by her peers.
A few drawings from her 10,000-mile cruise around the Baltic in
1936 on the S.S. Sagaporack are included.
Edna Lawrence consistently exhibited during her lifetime at the
South County Art Association, Providence Art Club, Providence Water
Color Club and the South County Art Association. Lawrence
was awarded the Alumni Award from Rhode Island School of Design
and the Providence Art Club Medal for extraordinary service.
Bert Gallery is pleased to represent a number of Rhode Island artists.
Feel free to stop by the gallery during regular hours and discover
many painters from the region.
Bert Gallery is located along the Providence waterfront at Corliss
Landing, 540 South Water Street. In 2008 Bert Gallery takes a look
at the "cultural awakenings" throughout the decades that
established Rhode Island as a destination for visual artists. Among
the wharfs and warehouses of this small industrial state a cultural
identity was born and nurtured.
