Brian Shure: Recent Paintings
An opening reception will be held on Thurs, November 6 at 5 pm
In Bannister Gallery’s upcoming exhibit Brian
Shure: Recent Paintings, the artist takes up the way people
fit into and use architectural spaces.
Shure says of his approach, “I am a craftsperson, an artist,
before I am a cultural anthropologist or whatever other term might
describe someone who carries out this kind of study. We observe
images with a different level of attention when we look at the rendering
of people than when we look at the rendering of architecture, and
I am fascinated with the way different levels of resolution in representing
these interwoven subjects color our perception of them when they
appear in the same image. We read the static, simultaneously available
surface of a drawing or painting very differently from the way we
interpret what we see happening in the space in front of us.”
Calling attention to the play of light on the built environment
has been Shure’s subject matter for the past 15 years. In
his newest works, the difference between acceptable levels of resolution
for people and buildings has increasingly become a central concern.
The exhibition is curated by Richard Whitten, RIC assistant professor
of art.
Since November 1978, the E. M. Bannister Gallery at Rhode Island
College has been in continuous operation in presenting a yearly
calendar of 8 – 10 exhibitions of contemporary art by local,
regional, and internationally renowned artists. The gallery was
created by the department of Art and was literally the center of
the department for two decades until its relocation in September
2000 to the Roberts Hall / Nazarian Center for the Performing Arts
complex. The gallery has presented artworks in all the spectrum
of traditional media, as well as more contemporary site specific,
electronic, and video projects.
Gallery hours during exhibits are Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and
Friday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Thursdays, noon to 9 p.m. Closed
weekends and holidays. Exhibits and events are free and open to
the public. Accessible to persons with disabilities.

Artist Reception November 20, 2008 | 5-9pm
I am fascinated by the concept of “journey” –
more specifically, the spirituality of journey – as seen through
ordinary appearances. Whether one is alone in a city taking the
train, or contemplating the beauty of a pastoral landscape, or a
figure imbedded in his personal landscape, there is movement and
stillness between where one is and where one could be. In this space
between two points – in the moments between – we live,
move, and sojourn. Through the portal of my camera lenses, which
are of my own design and fabrication, within the fabric of the cultural
landscape, I attempt to discover, interpret, and mirror the spirituality
of journey.

Come celebrate the Holiday’s with us at Gallery Z!
With the large amount of artwork we acquired this year, Gallery
Z has decided to devote the month of November to an exhibition that
features new selections from your favorite Gallery Z artists as
well as exciting work from new artists to the gallery.
The exhibit will feature one-of-a-kind, original artworks from
numerous local, national, and international talents. Featured artwork
will range in medium from painting, sculpture, and photography to
hand blown glass, ceramics and assemblages. The work represents
a marriage of compelling beauty and affordable, original artwork,
making the art a unique gift idea this holiday season.
The featured artist for the month of November is Connecticut-based
ceramic artist Dot Burnworth. Her classic form,
wheel-thrown stoneware pieces serve as functional objects, characterized
by their bright tones and aesthetic design which reflects the motions
of water and rhythms of the earth. Burnworth chooses to alter her
wheel thrown forms and multi-layers the slip and glaze during their
application to achieve her desired effect.
The opening reception for the exhibition will be held at Gallery
Z on Thursday, November 20th, from 5:00-9:00pm. Be sure to stop
in to see the wonderful collection we have compiled and celebrate
the holidays with us at Gallery Z.
On the third Thursday of each month, Gallery Z hosts and evening
of Food, Art & Wine from 5:30 – 8:00pm. Every month we
partner with a different local restaurant and winery to provide
a venue for enjoying world-class cuisine and wine in an environment
surrounded by fine art.
PUBLIC ART WINDOW: Gallery Z is pleased
to announce its first partnership with Festival Ballet Providence.
Since moving to the high-trafficked Atwells Avenue, Gallery Z has
dedicated a store front window to act in raising awareness of issues
of importance, offering space to the mission-based community. Find
out more by visiting: www.galleryzprov.com.
Located on Historic Federal Hill in Providence, Gallery Z provides
the Rhode Island community with an eclectic collection of art by
Armenian, local, national, and international artists from the 20th
century to the present. Since its inception in 2001 by photographer
Bérge Ara Zobian, Gallery Z has been spearheading efforts
to connect the public with the growing arts community. The gallery’s
public art window was created in the same spirit, geared towards
raising awareness of issues of importance to those in our community.
Gallery Z is a member of Gallery Night, Providence, and holds opening
receptions on the third Thursday of each month. Gallery Z offers

Tribute to Tibet
Gallery Night Reception : Thursday, November 20, 5-9 pm
Tribute to Tibet
Tibetan art and culture will be celebrated at Providence College
from September 21st through November 21st. Paintings and artifacts
from area collections will be displayed. Many of the works have
been chosen with the goal of clarifying the complexity of Tibetan
Buddhism.
Tibet is considered a ‘traditional’ culture, and its
artworks tend to change little over the centuries. The exhibition
shows this continuity through works that date back several centuries
to ones created recently. Modern works include a ‘Green Tara’
painted by a Tibetan Buddhist Nun, and a semi-abstract oil painting
by Karma Phuntsok, well-known Tibetan diaspora artist now living
in Australia.
Since the present Dalai Lama’s exile from Tibet in 1959, the
world has become more aware of both the political issues and the
religious arts of Tibet. Two monks from the Dalai Lama’s Namgyal
Monastery in Ithaca, New York, created a Sand Mandala in the Gallery
as part of the program. The Mandala creation took place September
21st -27th. On the afternoon of September 27th the monks dismantled
the Mandala and took the sand to the river, near WaterPlace Park.
The sand was poured into the river during a Water Fire Providence.
